Origin note: Uganda Bugisu AB

A fully washed Arabica from Eastern Uganda and Mount Elgon, known for winey, fruity East African character.

Bugisu is washed Arabica coffee produced in Eastern Uganda, especially around the volcanic slopes of Mount Elgon. In our range it belongs in Explorer because it can carry winey, fruity East African character while still offering cocoa and spice.

Technical details

  • Origin: Uganda
  • Region: Eastern Uganda
  • Grade: AB
  • Varieties: Bourbon, SL28
  • Process: Fully washed
  • Altitude: 1,300 to 2,600 meters above sea level

Cultivation

The supplier document notes that most producers are smallholders, often farming fewer than 2.5 hectares. Coffee is commonly intercropped with traditional food crops, and banana trees provide shade as well as food for families.

Harvest and processing

Ripe cherry is selectively handpicked. Small farming families pulp coffee with hand pulpers, ferment it, wash it in clean water and dry the parchment on patios or raised beds.

How to think about it

Bugisu is not the safest choice for every automatic machine. It is better for customers who want a more expressive East African profile and are happy with winey fruit, structure and spice.
